Overpopulation issues in Jails

Overpopulation in correctional facilities is a major issue. Jails are becoming more populated with people from all races. Many crimes ranging from more serious offenses to possible misdemeanors. Expenses rises beyond many of the budget which causes issues to the US. It is important to protect society and communities but it would be essential if funding was viewed as well. The more prisoners there are, the more staff needed to fit the jail’s man to man ratio, in order to provide security. If I was able to make a change, I would institute changes in the booking process. Less serious crimes that can be resolved by fines or community service will be put into place to avoid overpopulation. It is important to assess situations thoroughly and efficiently to ensure that people are spending time in jail for misdemeanors. Any serious crime committed, would definitely result in jail time but the ones that aren’t serious, assessing the offender and the offense prior to sending them to jail. Furthermore, it is necessary to be aware of the funding increases due to overpopulation of prisons. By doing so, is by being aware of the more serious crimes and also, being alert about the less serious crimes and how we can help those who have had misdemeanor offenses and resolve so it doesn’t result in prison time.
