There are approximately 10 million arrest made a year for all offenses by police officers. Some arrest are more serious than others but overall everyone should be treated equally regardless of the circumstances. In some facilities, that isn’t always the case unfortunately. For example, according to a CNN inside a Mississippi state prison. A CNN article was published on February 04, 2020, where many inmates described that the state’a prison was inhumane. Inmates also described that they feared for their lives mainly because of the way they have been mistreated by correctional officers and staff members and most of what they have witnessed of other inmates. According to the CNN article “Nine inmates have died at Parchman in a little more than a month, most of which as a result of either violence or suicide”, although most inmates are arrested for committing crime/crimes, that does not give staff members the right to treat them any less. Correctional officers should be protecting and serving all inmates equally despite their stay inside the facility. Inmates described the facility to be dangerous and the conditions were filthy, including gang violence, lack of access to showers, and raw sewage covering their cell floors. The descriptions of the conditions provided by inmates are unbelievable. CNN also stated that, there were restrictions on prisoners movement and they were not allowed visits due to the high violence in the facility. Due to gang related issues, prisoners are scared and employees have not done anything to improve the spiraling adversities. Treating prisoners with dignity and respect could reduce crimes, in my opinion. When inmates are treated unfairly they tend to build up more anger during their stay in facilities, as anger is built everything triggers them which causes emotional or physical outbursts. There are many challenges faced when becoming an employee at any type of correctional facilities but it is important to give everyone with respect and treat prisoners like the human they are regardless of the fact that they are standing in a orange jumpsuit.
